Keystone will create good jobs.
The Keystone XL pipeline project could provide an estimated $20 billion in value to the United States economy, according to an independent analysis conducted by The Perryman Group. The project would expand existing pipelines to connect facilities in Alberta, Canada to facilities along the Texas Gulf Coast. All told, at least 20,000 American workers would be employed in building the 1,700-mile pipeline. The estimated investment to build the pipeline is is $7 billion.
What’s more, owners of the Keystone Pipeline would pay an estimated $5.2 billion in property taxes to states along the pipeline route during the operational life of the pipeline.
“The construction of the Keystone XL pipeline would deliver an additional 700,000 to 830,000 barrels of oil per day to the U.S. from Canada, the U.S.’s largest supplier of oil. Not only is the delay preventing additional imports from Canada, it is also preventing the creation of thousands of private-sector jobs. Building the pipeline would directly create 20,000 truly shovel-ready jobs; the Canadian Energy Research Institute estimates that current pipeline operations and the addition of the Keystone XL pipeline would create 179,000 American jobs by 2035.” — The Heritage Foundation

Much of our current oil supply comes from countries that are openly hostile to the Unites States government, our political system and our way of life. According to an independent study of the Keystone pipeline project by The Perryman Group,
- The United States cannot produce enough of our own energy to meet current needs, much less future needs–even with conservation, alternative energy such as wind and solar, new oil discoveries and new technology. So it’s inevitable that we will be forced to continue to import energy resources.
- Once the Keystone Gulf Coast Expansion is completed, it could replace about half the amount of oil the U.S. currently imports from hostile regimes in the Middle East or Venezuela.
- A consistent source of stable energy supplies will help to lower costs to consumers and boost the U.S. economy.
“The rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline is a loss for our economy and our energy security….It would cut in half the amount of oil we import from the Middle East and Venezuela…” — Louisiana Representative Bill Cassidy, M.D.
“Every barrel of oil we import from Canada via the Keystone Pipeline is one less barrel we will have to import from hostile and unstable regimes overseas. General Jim Jones, President Obama’s former National Security Advisor, notes “I feel strongly approving [Keystone XL] serves the economic and security interests of the United States…Every day it becomes more evident for our nation to achieve true energy security we must engage our stable and reliable neighbors — Canada in particular. The country can’t afford to pass up the opportunity for reliable supply from a close ally and neighbor…” — National Security Advisor General Jim Jones

Keystone XL facts and statistics
What is the Keystone XL pipeline?
Keystone XL is a 36-inch crude oil pipeline that will begin in Alberta, Canada and extend through the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, and then through the U.S. States of Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska. It would incorporate a portion of the already-existing Keystone Pipeline through Nebraska and Kansas to refineries in Cushing, Oklahoma before continuing through Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast of Texas. The total length of the Keystone Pipeline will be approximately 1,700 miles.
How much oil will the Keystone XL pipeline transport?
The Keystone XL pipeline will have the capacity to transport 830,000 barrels of oil per day. Together with the existing two phases of the Keystone Pipeline, the entire system would be able to transport 1.3 million barrels of crude oil per day to refineries in Oklahoma and along the Gulf Coast of Texas.
What is the source of the oil that will be transported through the Keystone pipeline?
Approximately one-fourth of the oil delivered by Keystone XL will be American crude oil from Montana and North Dakota, with the balance coming from Canadian sources.
How safe are pipelines compared to other transportation methods?
Compared to other methods of moving oil such as trucks, tankers and rail, pipelines have significantly lower incident rates. In fact, according to the The Association of Oil Pipelines, pipelines have a better safety record than all other modes of oil transportation.
Pipeline accidents tend to be rare, and when they happen they tend to be small. Most pipeline leaks involve three barrels or less, 80% of spills involve less than 50 barrels and less than one-half of one percent of spills total more than 10,000 barrels. According to the Association of Oil Pipelines, spills along hazardous liquid pipeline rights-of-way have declined by 60% between 1999 and 2007, to 0.8 incidents per thousand miles in 2005-2007.
Why does the Consumer Energy Alliance support the Keystone XL Pipeline Project?
The Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) supports improved domestic and global energy security and stable prices for consumers. The CEA also believes that the United States needs a national energy policy that provides a comprehensive solution, including more access to offshore and onshore oil & natural gas. The CEA supports projects, policies and initiatives like the Keystone Pipeline that may lead to the United States becoming more energy independent.
